In Loving Memory of Shakiya Pridgen
With broken hearts and deep sorrow, we mourn the tragic loss of Shakiya Pridgen, a 23-year-old mother of two who was senselessly taken far too soon in a heartbreaking shooting at The Woods at Peppertree apartments in DeKalb County.
Shakiya’s life was cut short at a time when she should have been preparing to welcome her third child into the world. According to her mother, Ver’Dina Scott, Shakiya was just two weeks away from giving birth. What should have been a season of joy, anticipation, and new beginnings has now turned into unimaginable pain and grief for her family.
Her passing leaves behind her 1-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter, two young children who will now have to grow up without the love, comfort, and guidance of their mother. In the midst of this devastating tragedy, their grandmother, Ver’Dina Scott, is stepping in to care for them — providing the love, strength, and stability they will need as they face this painful new reality.
No child should have to lose their mother so young, and no mother should have to bury her daughter while also preparing to raise her grandchildren. The weight of this loss is beyond words.
Shakiya was more than a victim of violence—she was a daughter, a mother, and a woman with dreams, responsibilities, and a future that was stolen from her. Her children were her world, and everything she did was for them. She was on the verge of bringing another life into the world, making this tragedy even more heartbreaking.
As DeKalb County Police continue their investigation and search for answers, the family is left to pick up the pieces of a shattered future. At this time, no arrests have been made, leaving loved ones waiting for justice.
This tragedy is a painful reminder of how quickly violence can take away the people we love and change lives forever. It is also a call for compassion, support, and community for families facing unimaginable heartbreak.
To Ver’Dina Scott, Shakiya’s children, and all her family and friends, we extend our deepest condolences, love, and prayers during this difficult time. May they find strength in each other, comfort in the memories they shared, and hope as they move forward.
Rest in peace, Shakiya Pridgen. Your life was taken too soon, but your love, your spirit, and your memory will live on forever through your children and all who loved you. 💔🙏
